An exquisite selection of Peruvian nativity scenes from the Carmen Würth Collection will be on display in the Adolf Würth Hall at Kunsthalle Würth over the Advent and Christmas period. At the suggestion and with the support of Sonja Götzelmann from Bad Mergentheim, Carmen Würth continuously and purposefully built up her private collection of Peruvian nativity scenes over the years. Today, this focus of Carmen Würth's collection comprises 185 exhibits.

The South American country has one of the richest nativity scene traditions in the world: magnificent retablos, mobile altars, tell the Christmas story embedded in the everyday culture of the people, elegant figures with delicate facial features and detailed painted clothing immerse the well-known staff in new colors, delicate clay work bears witness to the veneration of the infant Jesus, the Niño Manuelito. In the Nacimientos, the Peruvian nativity scenes, influences from the Spanish Baroque style merge with indigenous craftsmanship, which enjoys the highest reputation in international nativity scene art. Particularly striking are the retablos by Maximiano Ochante Lozano and the works by Mendívil, which has produced several generations of highly talented nativity scene artists and an elegant style with strikingly long necks.

A singing angel in colorful Peruvian costume plays a stringed instrument.

Maximiano Ochante Lozano, Musizierender Engel, around 1999, Modeling clay, painted.

A colorful group of figures with feathered hats, three of the people wearing crowns and thus recognizable as the Three Wise Men. In front of the group, the baby Jesus lies on the ground.

Familie Mendívil, Large Figurine Group, around 1980, Painted, wood, feathers.

A family dressed in Peruvian attire on the run. They are sitting on a donkey, which is being led by him. The mother carries a baby in a belly pouch, the father a chicken under his arm. A llama loaded with, among other things, a cat and other animals like pigs and goats complete the group, which passes by two cacti. An oversized, striding angel seems to be showing the way.

Arístides Quispe Lope, Flight into Egypt (The great Escape), around 2000, ceramic, painted, 11 pieces.

A reredos with colorful figures. In the center, the heavenly choir is grouped as an orchestra with pan flutes around a nativity ensemble under the star. On the side doors, ox, lion, dove, and angel are neatly arranged. Each being has a halo. An angel with wings writes in a book with a feather and fits into a quarter of the space. The animals are facing the nativity. Above all, the dove hovers as a symbol of God.

Maximiano Ochante Lozano, Retablo: Nativity Scene with Scissor Dancers, 2001, wood, wire, and stones, painted.
